Since 1880

MONTAGUT is a French clothing company established in 1880. Six generations later, it is still owned by the descendants of the original founders. The brand is a symbol of quality, status and classic French elegance. We have built our expertise and outstanding footprint over more than a century from our roots in the village of Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut in the south of France to China where the company has been present for more than 40 years with now up to 2,000 points of sale.

1880: In The Beginning

1880: In The Beginning

Based in Auzene valley near Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut, Adolphe Tinland, a young entrepreneur eager to enable his native Ardeche to benefit from the industrial boom, created a silk-milling factory powered by the driving force of the river.

1990: The Succession

1900: The Succession

The business would be passed onto his son Gaston, then to the next three generations.

1925: Silk Stockings

1925: Silk Stockings

Between the beginning of the 20th century and the First World War, Paris became known as the heart of the fashion world, As soon as the war was over, Georges Tinland created a silk-knitting workshop near Valence: the Bonneterie Cevenole. He was the first, in 1925, to sell silk stocking under the name Montagut, which is why his name is associated with the brand’s beginnings.

1944: During the Second World War

Like many Ardeche businesses, the Bonneterie Cevenole provided support to the Resistance by lending trucks and housing refugees. Around that time, Georges Tinland oriented the brand towards the most demanding clientele, producing luxury lingerie and marking the beginning of a long tradition of excellence withing the company.

1950: New Materials

The post-war period was marked by the storage of many natural materials, including silk. In response to this major problem, nylon and rayon were gradually introduced in lingerie and stockings. The flower that would become Montagut’s logo made its first appearance.

1963: Creation of the Fil Lumiere

In 1963, Leo Gros, Georges Tinland’s son-in-law, developed with his friend an artificial thread that imitated all the qualities of silk, This unique material was named Fil Lumiere by its creator, who at the time was doubtless far from imagining the extend to which his invention would raise the brand’s profile. Leo Gros’s enterprising spirit led him to travel around the world, and brand’s Fil Lumiere polo shirts became known throughout the Middle East and Indochina.

1979: Road to China

MONTAGUT first entered China market through its Hong Kong headquarters, with FIL LUMIERE as our signature product which radically sped up the growth of the company.

2000: Conquering The Asian Market

Montagut is the most famous polo-shirt brand in China. At the dawn of the 21st century, Pierre Gros was wanting to extend the range to all ready-to-wear from the wear 2000, while retaining the brand’s signature elegance. Many new stores were opened, particularly in Asia, selling a variety of clothing items and accessories.

2025: The Company Today

Drawing on our 40+ year experience in China, today MONTAGUT manages a wide range of licensing programs within different product categories, including menswear, ladies’ wear, leather goods & shoes, children’s wear, children’s shoes, socks & underwear, home textile, fashion jewelry, cashmere and stationary across the world, and currently evaluating global opportunities.

Over 145 Years of French Elegance
and Global Craftsmanship

Since 1880, Maison Montagut has been an expert in knitting and has perpetuated its ancestral know-how from generation to generation. From silk thread to sweater, through hosiery and lingerie, our house has developed unique expertise in the manufacture of refined knitted items.

Given the current questions about the environment and the future of our planet, we are aware that the ready-to-wear environment and more particularly the knitwear sector is not a good one. Despite everything, since our creation, we have always surrounded ourselves with reliable partners with products of exemplary quality but above all with the most responsible creation and making conditions possible. However, in order not to lie to you, we know that the race towards totally controlled and ethical production has only just begun.

Adolphe Tinland

The Founder

Contemplating a world living at the exciting pace of industrialization, Adolphe Tinland (1831 – 1902) understood the importance of change. Driven by the desire to represent the values of his region as well as his own skills (he was originally a silk miller) in this new world, he decided to invest in it by creating a silk factory, founded on excellence and expertise , which he called Montagut.

Gaston Tinland

Gaston Tinland

The Industrialist

Gaston, Adolphe’s eldest son, succeeded in developing and industrializing the business, notably by creating a knitting and stocking workshop in 1925, using electrically powered machines and employing about 50 workers.

Georges Tinland

The Creator of the Montagut Brand

In the mid-1920s, Georges Tinland, Adolphe’s son, created a silk-knitting factory at Valence (in the Drome): the Bonneterie Cevenole. Taking a strategic new direction, he decided to make and sell high-quality lingerie and stocking under the name of Montagut. A second factory was built in Guilherand-Granges (the group’s current headquarters) to increase the production of silk stockings. This first strategic turning point enabled the brand to flourish before the Second World War, especially since stocking were slowly becoming mass-market accessories.

Leo Gros

The inventor of Fil Lumiere

After excelling in engineering studies, Leos Gros returned to Ganges to take over his father’s, Fernard Gros’s, dyeing factory, which brought him into contact with Bonneterie Cevenole and Georges Tinland, who was one of his clients. In 1963, Leo Gros (who, after falling madly in love with George Tinland’s daughter, had become his son-in-law) developed an artificial thread with all the qualities of silk and called it Fil Lumiere, In the course of his travels, he promoted Fil Lumiere Montagut polo shirts throughout the Middle East and Indochina. They become the brand’s signature product!

Pierre Gros
